Single Pin Picking (SPP) and Raking
Lock picking is the non-destructive manipulation of a cylinder's internal components to reach the shear line without using the original key.

Single Pin Picking relies on microscopic manufacturing tolerances where pin chambers are never drilled in a perfectly straight line. When rotational tension is applied to the plug, one pin stack binds first.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Apply Rotational Tension: Insert a tension tool (Top of Keyway / TOK or Bottom of Keyway / BOK) and apply very light rotational pressure.
- Find the Binding Pin: Probe each pin chamber with a hook pick. Free pins will spring back when pressed; the binding pin will feel rigid and resistant.
- Lift to Shear: Gently lift the binding pin until a distinct click is felt and the plug rotates slightly forward.
- Repeat the Binding Order: Find the next binding pin in the sequence and repeat until all pin stacks are set across the shear line.
- Rotate the Plug: Once the final pin sets, the plug turns freely and unlocks the mechanism.
Raking & Kinetic Techniques
Raking uses wave, worm, or bogota pick profiles scrubbed rapidly across the pin stacks under light, fluctuating tension to bounce driver pins across the shear line simultaneously.
- Best Suited For: Standard pin tumbler locks with low security tolerances and mild bitting differentials.
- Limitations: Ineffective against high-security spool, serrated, or sidebar mechanisms.
